Route options and planning: from the Netherlands to the Caribbean

2026-03-107 min read

The route from the Netherlands to the Caribbean is not simply a straight line on the map. It is a carefully planned journey that takes into account weather, seasons, and logistics. Below is the planning for 2027-2028.

Preparation (Autumn 2026 – Spring 2027)

Laying the foundation for a safe and well-organised expedition. In this phase, everything is prepared — from the project plan and finances to assembling the Founding Crew. The ship undergoes maintenance and technical inspections, and sailing training and trial sails are organised.

Netherlands to Southern Europe (May – August 2027)

In legs along the Atlantic coast heading south. A combination of offshore legs and coastal navigation.

Possible stops along the way:

  • Brest or Cherbourg (France) — first port call after the North Sea
  • La Coruña or Vigo (Spain) — Galician coast, beautiful harbours
  • Cascais or Lagos (Portugal) — Portuguese coast, pleasant climate
  • Las Palmas de Gran Canaria — traditional departure point for the crossing
  • Canary Islands (September – November 2027)

In Las Palmas we take time to thoroughly inspect the ship and prepare for the ocean crossing. This is also the time for crew changes.

We plan several weeks of preparation:

  • Final technical checks and maintenance
  • Provisioning for the crossing
  • Studying weather windows
  • Safety briefings and ocean training
  • Atlantic Crossing (December 2027)

The highlight: the crossing from the Canary Islands to the Caribbean. Approximately 2,700 nautical miles, 18-25 days entirely at sea. Watches: four hours on, eight hours off.

Caribbean Programme (January – April 2028)

After arrival, a varied programme of island hopping, experiencing local culture, and further offshore legs follows. The exact programme is determined in consultation with the Founding Crew.

    Decision Point (Spring 2028)

In the spring of 2028, a decision is made about what comes next:

  • Return to Europe — via the Azores back to the Netherlands
  • Extension in the Caribbean — with new crew and programme
  • Year programme — a continuous expedition programme
  • The planning is further developed in consultation with the Founding Crew.
